Pelvic Floor Pilates

A whole-body approach to strengthening and restoring your pelvic floor.

What is Pelvic Floor Pilates?

What Is Pilates – Rehab-Based and Core Stabilization Training?

Pilates is a full-body, spring-based resistance workout designed to build core stability and strength, improve body awareness and control, and restore muscular and postural balance — all while keeping movement engaging and enjoyable.

At Sarton Pelvic Healing, we don’t offer generic Pilates classes. Instead, we provide a highly specialized 1 on 1 Pelvic Floor Pilates program that you won’t find anywhere else. Our instructors collaborate directly with our pelvic floor physical therapists to create a research-based, individualized program that supports your unique needs.

For many patients, Pilates becomes an essential part of their healing journey.

How It Helps

Pre-Natal Pilates Program

The Sarton Pelvic Healing Pre-Natal Pilates Program is designed to carry you through the incredible journey of pregnancy — a time of remarkable physical and hormonal changes. As your body adapts, ligaments become more flexible, posture shifts, and your center of gravity moves forward. While the body naturally compensates for these changes, it doesn’t always do so in the healthiest way.

Our specialized program focuses on the unique needs of pregnancy, including:

  • Relaxed belly breathing and conscious relaxation
  • Pelvic floor awareness and control
  • Postural balance and stability
  • Upper body, core, and leg strength
  • Safe stretching for common areas of tension (neck, upper back, hips, and feet)

Each pre- and post-natal Pilates session begins with a movement analysis, including assessment of breathing patterns and review of proper core muscle function. You’ll learn safe, effective exercises that help prevent or relieve many common pregnancy-related concerns such as:

  • Incontinence
  • Low back pain
  • Pubic symphysis or hip pain
  • Groin or tailbone pain
  • Diastasis recti (abdominal separation)

Program Focus

  • Strengthening abdominal and core muscles
  • Supporting the pelvic floor
  • Building strength in the upper back and pelvic stabilizers
  • Improving posture and breath awareness
  • Easing tension and discomfort with safe stretches

This program is tailored for all levels — no prior Pilates experience is necessary. Our goal is to help you feel supported, strong, and confident as your body prepares for birth.

Postpartum Pilates Program

The Sarton Pelvic Healing Postpartum Pilates Program is designed to help your body safely and effectively recover from the physical demands of pregnancy and childbirth. Using research-based principles, this program focuses on restoring core and pelvic floor function, easing common postpartum discomforts, and rebuilding strength so you can move with confidence again.

Each session begins with a movement analysis, including an assessment of breathing patterns and review of proper core muscle function. You’ll learn safe, tailored exercises that not only strengthen but also protect your healing body, with special attention to conditions such as Diastasis Recti (DRA), pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence, and postpartum pain.

Program Focus

  • Reintegrating and reconnecting with your core and pelvic floor
  • Relieving back pain by strengthening the core, pelvic floor, arms, and back
  • Core and postural strengthening to ease tightness from feeding, baby carrying, and lack of sleep
  • Learning simple strategies to manage the physical and postural demands of caring for a newborn
  • Addressing Diastasis Recti (a separate intake and assessment is required before beginning the program if this has not yet been completed)

This program is appropriate for all levels — no previous Pilates experience is required.

Important: If you are less than 6 weeks postpartum (or 8 weeks after a Cesarean birth), you will first need to be evaluated by one of our pelvic floor physical therapists before beginning this program.

Pelvic Pain Pilates Program

The Sarton Pelvic Healing Pelvic Pain Pilates Program is a gentle, restorative approach to exercise designed specifically for patients managing pelvic pain. This program combines mindful movement with targeted strengthening and stretching to improve posture, restore balance, increase flexibility and circulation, and reduce stress. By integrating breathwork, body awareness, and conscious relaxation, it supports both the body and the nervous system in healing.

Each session begins with a movement analysis, including an assessment of breathing patterns and review of core muscle function. From there, exercises are tailored to your individual needs, with an emphasis on safe, supportive, and pain-reducing movement.

Program Focus

  • Strengthening abdominal muscles, multifidus, and deep stabilizers
  • Pelvic floor lengthening and hip opening techniques
  • Improving postural awareness and alignment
  • Learning proper breathing for relaxation and core support
  • Targeted stretches for the hips, pelvis, spine, and lower extremities

This program is appropriate for all levels, and no prior Pilates experience is necessary.

What to Expect

During a pelvic floor Pilates session, you’ll work one-on-one with your therapist using gentle, targeted movements designed to restore balance, strength, and flexibility. Exercises often include breathwork, core activation, posture training, and the use of equipment such as the Pilates reformer or small props. Each movement is customized to your body and your pelvic floor needs, ensuring a safe, supportive, and effective experience.

Typical duration and frequency

Sessions typically last 55 minutes, depending on your treatment plan. Many patients benefit from starting with 1-2 sessions per week, then tapering to a maintenance program as strength and confidence improve. Your therapist will guide you on the frequency that best supports your healing and long-term goals.

Sensations and Safety Considerations

You can expect gentle muscle engagement, stretching, and a sense of improved alignment during and after your session. Most patients describe feeling both strengthened and relaxed at the end. Movements are carefully monitored to avoid strain or overexertion, making this approach safe for people in all stages of healing — including pregnancy, postpartum, and recovery from pelvic floor dysfunction. Your therapist will adjust exercises to your comfort level and progress, ensuring you always feel supported.
