Visceral Manipulation

Experience a gentle yet  profound adjunct to pelvic floor therapy that restores balance, relieves pain, and supports pelvic health from the inside out.

What is Visceral Manipulation?

Visceral Manipulation is a gentle, hands-on therapy that releases restrictions in the body’s organs and surrounding connective tissues. By improving mobility and harmony between your organs, fascia, and musculoskeletal system, it helps reduce pain, improve digestion, and enhance pelvic floor function. This integrative approach supports whole-body healing and complements traditional pelvic floor physical therapy.

At Sarton Physical Therapy, we searched for over 10 years to bring an advanced practitioner in this highly specialized technique to our patients. We are thrilled to have found Megan, one of the few Level 4–trained pelvic floor therapists in Visceral Manipulation through The Barral Institute. She is truly a hidden gem in Orange County, offering a level of expertise that is rare and transformative for patients.

How It Helps

Visceral manipulation relieves pelvic and abdominal pain by releasing restrictions in the organs and their surrounding fascia. It works to

  • Improve digestion and reduce symptoms such as bloating, constipation, IBS or reflux
  • Enhance pelvic floor function, supporting patients with incontinence, prolapse, or painful intercourse
  • Aid in post-surgical recovery, including C-section and abdominal surgeries, by gently mobilizing scar tissue
  • Reduce low back, hip, and sacroiliac joint pain often linked to restricted organ mobility
  • Restore mobility and circulation, helping tissues function more efficiently
  • Support the nervous system, promoting relaxation and whole-body balance
  • Neural Manipulation

Neural Manipulation is a precise manual therapy that facilitates free movement of the nerves in their surroundings; that is, in relation to adjacent muscles, fascia, narrow passages in the aponeurosis, organs and bones. A nerve only functions optimally when it is able to move freely in its surrounding tissues.

Evidence-Based Rationale for Visceral Manipulation

Visceral Manipulation is rooted in the principle that restricted movement of the body’s organs can create pain, dysfunction, and compensations throughout the musculoskeletal system. Research published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies and supported by the Barral Institute has shown that visceral techniques can improve musculoskeletal pain, reduce urinary incontinence, and support functional recovery.

Clinical experience further demonstrates that patients often notice improvements in mobility, alignment, and pain reduction within the first session, making Visceral Manipulation a powerful complement to traditional pelvic floor physical therapy.

What to Expect

Overview of What Happens During a Session
You’ll lie comfortably on the treatment table while your therapist uses gentle, precise touch to evaluate how your organs and surrounding tissues are moving. With light, hands-on techniques, your therapist identifies restrictions and helps release tension so your body can return to a more natural state of balance. The work is subtle, but many patients notice immediate changes such as easier breathing, reduced tightness, or a sense of lightness.

Typical Duration and Frequency
Sessions typically last 45-60 minutes. For many patients, changes can be felt even in the first session, but ongoing treatment is often recommended for lasting improvement. Your therapist will work with you to determine the frequency — often starting with weekly sessions, then tapering as your body begins to integrate the changes.

Sensations and Safety Considerations
Most patients describe Visceral Manipulation as feeling gentle, soothing, and deeply relaxing. Because the touch is light and non-invasive, there is no pain and no risk of tissue damage. Instead of forceful adjustments, the therapy works with your body’s natural rhythms, making it safe for a wide range of conditions, including postpartum recovery, pelvic pain, digestive issues, and post-surgical healing.
