C-section Rehabilitation

Your recovery matters—this is more than just “healing from childbirth,” it’s healing from major surgery. We’re here to help you move, feel, and live fully again.

What is C-section Rehabilitation?

A Cesarean section (C-section) is a common way to give birth and is also a major abdominal surgery. While most postpartum care focuses on making sure you and your baby are healthy in those early weeks, it’s less common to receive guidance on how to fully restore your strength, mobility, and comfort after this type of birth. Recovery is more than just waiting for the incision to heal – it’s about helping your body move and function well again.

C-section rehabilitation is specialized pelvic floor and core physical therapy designed to address the unique recovery needs after surgery. It goes far beyond basic exercise—it’s about releasing scar tissue restrictions, reducing abdominal and pelvic pain, retraining core muscles, improving posture and movement patterns, and restoring confidence in your body.

This care is for anyone who has had a C-section, whether it was recent or years ago. You do not need to wait until you are “done having children” to begin—rehab can help in between pregnancies and can even prepare your body for future births. At the same time, we can address other postpartum concerns such as diastasis recti, pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary leakage, or back and hip pain, so you can feel supported in every part of your recovery journey.

Common Symptoms

How Does It Feel?

  • Abdominal tightness or pulling around the scar
  • “Shelf” appearance of lower abdomen
  • Pain or tenderness at or near the incision site
  • Core weakness or difficulty engaging abdominal muscles
  • Back, hip, or pelvic discomfort
  • Numbness or tingling near the scar
  • Digestive changes, bloating, or constipation
  • Pain with exercise, lifting, or sexual activity
  • Feeling of “disconnect” from your core or pelvic floor

What Causes It?

C-section recovery can be complex because it involves healing multiple layers of tissue—from skin to fascia to muscle. Scar tissue can limit mobility and contribute to pain, while abdominal and pelvic floor muscles may be weakened or imbalanced from pregnancy and surgery.

Other factors, such as repeated C-sections, pre-existing pelvic floor tension, posture changes during pregnancy, or prolonged labor before surgery, can further affect recovery. Left unaddressed, these changes can persist for months or years, impacting movement, comfort, and confidence.

How We Identify the Root Cause

We start with a thorough conversation about your birth experience, current symptoms, daily activities, and goals. Our evaluation may include:

  • Gentle assessment of scar mobility and abdominal tissue
  • Pelvic floor muscle evaluation (internal and/or external)
  • Posture, breathing, and movement analysis
  • Core strength and coordination testing
  • Screening for other postpartum concerns, such as diastasis recti, pelvic organ prolapse, or incontinence

We collaborate closely with your other providers – OB-GYN, midwife, or other specialists – to ensure your care is safe, coordinated, and tailored to your healing stage. Whether you’re newly postpartum or years out from surgery, we create a plan to restore strength, function, and confidence.
