Urinary Urgency and Frequency

When every bathroom trip feels urgent and unpredictable, it can take over your life. Relief is possible—with the right support and a plan for healing.

What is Urinary Urgency and Frequency?

Urinary frequency (needing to urinate often) and urgency (a sudden, strong urge to urinate) are common bladder symptoms that may signal pelvic floor dysfunction.

These symptoms can be disruptive to daily life including difficulty sleeping and creating anxiety around long meetings, drives, or social activities.

These symptoms may be caused by a variety of factors, including bladder irritants, dehydration, UTIs, STIs, and/or pelvic floor dysfunction. When UTI and STI tests keep coming out negative, there is usually an issue at the pelvic floor. Understanding the root cause is key to managing symptoms and restoring comfort and confidence in daily routines.

How We Identify the Root Cause

During the evaluation, our pelvic health physical therapists will do a comprehensive “interview” to find out all of your history & examine you from head-to-toe including:

  • Internal pelvic floor assessment (checking to see what muscles are tight and seeing if it is compressing the urethra or bladder giving urges to pee)
  • Bladder Mobility
  • Fascial Restrictions
  • Bladder Habits
  • Tempomandibular Joint Dysfunction (if you tend to clench your jaw – there’s a connection to the pelvic floor!)
  • Posture
  • Breathing
  • Muscle weaknesses (head to toe)
  • Referring to a physician if UTIs and STIs have not been cleared yet
